Brink Forest Products achieves ISO 14001 certification
…. The first forest products manufacturing plant to achieve both ISO
14001 and ISO 9001 certification
Prince George, BC A leading Prince George secondary forest products
manufacturer, Brink Forest Products Ltd., has achieved another prestigious quality
milestone with certification of an environmental management system to ISO 14001
standards. The company is also the first and only forest products manufacturer
in B.C. to achieve certification to both ISO 14001 environmental standards and
ISO 9001 quality standards in all aspects of their operation. The Company received
written confirmation on certification following completion of the registration
audit on Friday, December 21, 2001.
ISO 14001 is an internationally recognized environmental management system
that requires that an organization consider, monitor and measure the environmental
performance of its activities, products and services in order to continually
improve such performance. In order to achieve certification to ISO 14001 standards,
Brink Forest Products took a hard look at all areas where the business has an
environmental impact. Brink Forest Products Founder and President John Brink
says, “This systematic approach will produce benefits such as reduced cost
of waste management, savings in consumption of energy and materials, lower distribution
costs, improved corporate image and continuous improvement of environmental
performance.” Mr. Brink said, “This is a wonderful achievement and
a credit to the excellent work of our employees.” He added, “Our staff
is very enthusiastic and has a good understanding of the importance of ISO certification.”
John Brink is proud of his company’s achievements in the ISO family of
standards. He said, “I have deeply rooted beliefs in the importance of
environmental stewardship. A core element of my vision for Brink Forest Products
is the highest respect for our environment. Our certification to ISO 14001 standards
is formal recognition of a management system that assists us in achieving and
maintaining this goal.” Mr. Brink says the achievement is also noteworthy
because of the scope of the certification, which covers the entire design and
manufacturing process. He said, “Our finished manufactured product is itself
certified to ISO 14001 standards.” “The wood we use in our manufacturing
process is harvested from land certified under ISO 14001 environmental standards,”
adds Mr. Brink.
Brink Forest Products achieved certification to ISO 9001 standards just over
a year ago. The quality assurance standards represented by ISO 9001 certification
ensures that the final products satisfy and exceed the quality requirements
demanded by their customers. “It makes good business sense to invest in
certification,” adds Mr. Brink, “with benefits to the environment
including the neighboring Nechako River, our downtown core of which we’re
a proud part and to our customers.” Brink Forest Products is not a newcomer
to environmental excellence, and received the “Green Award” for environmental
stewardship at the Prince George Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards
last fall.
Renata King, Manager, BDC Consulting Group, says “British Columbian businesses,
particularly in the forestry sector, are competing on a world stage, where quality
– in management, products, services and environmental stewardship –
is rapidly becoming a prerequisite.” “Achieving ISO certification
is no small task,” she added, “so we congratulate John and his team
for their vision and commitment to making Brink Forest products a leader in
their industry”.
